Denise Fujiwara, choreographer, dancer,
actor, teacher and artistic director, is one of the most diverse talents
to evolve on the Canadian dance scene. Denise is a master of Butoh dance,
a twentieth-century Japanese form in which dance and theater have never
been separate.
"Butoh is a modern form,"
explains Fujiwara, "but its principles are diametrically opposed to
those of contemporary dance. In this choreographic process, we will train
the body and the imaginationby working from vivid internal conditions expressed
through intense physicality. Using Butoh as a foundation we work
to reveal the dance's inner life of authenticity, depth and paradox, and
to express one’s humanity in all of its irrationality, ugliness, beauty
and mirth." |
